I'm Matthew Woodhead — a business adviser, qualified accountant, entrepreneur and company director who has spent more than 30 years working with businesses.
I've built and run businesses myself. That matters to me because I know a business plan is not simply a document or an academic exercise. Behind it may be someone's savings, income, family, ambition and often a considerable amount of courage.
Professionally, my career has included supporting start-ups and growing SMEs, business planning, financial modelling, Start Up Loan assessment, grant assessment, funding applications, economic-development programmes, business recovery, board-level work and international consultancy.
I've worked with people launching their first business, established SMEs looking for their next stage of growth and much larger organisations facing complex commercial decisions.
But the part I have always enjoyed most is surprisingly simple: understanding what somebody is trying to achieve, asking the right questions and helping them build a stronger business.
